Last week I had 2 visitors as guests from Malaysia whom I had met at the NZAEE 2010 conference in Napier (held the week before). Dr. Esther Daniels who is an Assoc.Prof and lecturer in UM and Shidah from WWF Malaysia were nice to extend their visit to Christchurch when initially they didn't plan to. At the conference, they told me that they were only going down to Kaikoura and back to Wellington but since I had invited them to stay at my home, they obliged. Although we had only met, I felt I already knew them...I guess as we each had similar interest in research, saving the environment and all...We also talked about doing research together...after I complete this phd of course!
And talking about phd, sometimes I like to read this article by Phillip and Pugh about How Not to get a phd!..Funny how my perspective has changed since I read this when I had just started on this phd journey and now as I am in my 3rd year. Initially I really could not relate well to what they were saying but now that I have gone through the proposal stage, data collection and now in my analysis and writing (?) stage, many things they say make me squeamish and I pray I don't get into any of the 7 category...especially the part about `it is important to have a cogent/convincing argument'. Anyhow, just to share this with my friends who are in the journey...
Be aware of the seven ways of not getting a PhD:
• not wanting a PhD;
• overestimating what is required;
• underestimating what is required;
• having a supervisor who does not know what is required;
• losing contact with your supervisor;
• not having a 'thesis' (i.e. position, argument) to maintain;
• taking a new job before completing.
Work to understand the implications of these traps fully in your own situation and determine not to succumb to them. Re-establish your determination regularly when blandishments to stray from your programme of work recur.
